Six British Citizens Jailed for One Million Pound Arson Attack on Storage Facility Holding Aid for Ukraine

A group of six individuals from Britain acting for Russia’s Wagner group have been handed jail terms for igniting a located in London storage unit that was storing humanitarian aid destined for Ukraine.

Court Rulings and Involvement

While delivering the sentences, the presiding judge at the Old Bailey stated that they had planned a “campaign of terrorism and sabotage” in the interests of the Russian government.

The individual named Dylan Earl was given a seventeen-year jail term with an extra six-year period on supervised release due to his “primary involvement”. Jake Reeves, from Croydon in south London, was given twelve years in prison with one year on supervised release. Their admitted crimes made them the first individuals to be convicted under the 2023 National Security Act.

Jakeem Rose, aged 23, also a Croydon resident, was jailed for eight years and 10 months. Nii Mensah, 23, a Thornton Heath, South London local, was sentenced to nine years and Ugnius Asmena, who was homeless, was handed seven years in prison. The trio were each found guilty of serious fire-setting and given a additional year on supervised release by the judge.

Ashton Evans, a 20-year-old drug dealer from Newport in Gwent, was jailed for nine years imprisonment with an extra year on extended licence after being convicted of withholding details regarding terrorist acts connected to another plot in Mayfair.

Details of the Attack

The deliberate fire on a Leyton-based storage facility in East London endangered sixty fire service personnel and caused £1m in damage in March of the previous year.

The court heard that Earl, 21 and Reeves, 24 remained in their residences while coordinating the incident for the Wagner mercenary organization, acting on behalf of the Russian Federation.

The group selected the storage facility because it was being utilized for providing humanitarian aid and satellite communication gear to Ukraine.

When the identical Ukrainian firm was hit by an intentional fire 10 days later in the Spanish capital, detectives from the Met’s counter-terrorism command assumed control of the investigation.

Proof and Additional Schemes

When Earl was arrested, police analysis of his cellphone revealed he had videos of the storage facility blaze being initiated and was in contact with the Wagner organization on Telegram, via an user profile with the usernames ‘Privet Bot’ and ‘Lucky Strike’.

Some of the messages indicated that preliminary surveillance for additional operations, involving arson attacks at a dining establishment and wine store in Mayfair owned by the Russian opposition figure Evgeny Chichvarkin had already been carried out. The use of explosives to damage buildings was also discussed.

Detectives discovered that the defendant Earl was also considering the possibility of kidnapping Chichvarkin and “sending him back to Russia to face prison”.

The drug dealer from Elmesthorpe, Leicestershire had talked about another potential attack in the Czech nation.

In a residence inspection, law enforcement located a Russian flag, more than £20,000 in cash and cocaine with a street value of approximately thirty-four thousand pounds.

Driving Factors and Court Comments

The proceedings revealed he was a participant in multiple pro-Russian propaganda channels and was driven by “simple and ugly greed”.

“This case is about the attempts by the Russian government to gain pernicious global influence using online platforms to enlist saboteurs vast distances from Moscow.”

She found the fire incident had a “link to terrorism” irrespective of if the individuals responsible knew it. The Wagner organization is banned by the UK government as a terrorist organisation.
