Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
